SDDI COLLAR DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS AND HOW THEY ARE MANUFACTURED

Mstr Alex SDDI Collars accurately reproduce the form and function of the Medieval iron collars used to restrain, control and punish misbehaving apprentices in Medieval Europe. Very similar collars were also used to restrain galley slaves, and by slave traders since Roman Times.

Mstr Alex SDDI Collars are manufactured in our own shop here in the United States. Thus we make certain that each collar is built to our own high standards.

How Our Collars are Manufactured.

Each standard collar is manufactured from 3/16 inch thick by 1 1/2 inch wide cold rolled raw steel stock. (Note: Collars are also available in 2 inch wide models, which are manufactured in the same way.) Two lengths of this steel are cut and then hand formed to the correct curve to make one half of a collar. After each half piece of the steel collar is formed to the correct diameter it is individually cut so that each piece is the correct length to make one half of a finished collar. The pieces are then sandblasted to remove all mill scale from the raw steel. Next the solid steel hinge barrel pieces, which are cut from 3/8 inside diameter heavy duty steel tubing and 3/8 diameter steel pivot pin are welded in place creating the hinge. After that the locking barrel pieces which are made from the same 3/8 heavy duty steel tubing, are hand welded to the collars. Next half circle heavy duty links are welded to the collars on the front and rear of the collars. These half circle heavy duty links are cut from proof steel chain in our shop. An appropriate length of chain, normally three feet long, although different lengths are available on request, is welded to the collar if requested. Once all the welding is complete, the collar is re sandblasted and buffed on a wire wheel to remove any slag from the welding and other manufacturing procedures. The collar is now ready for final step in the manufacturing process, which is the Powder Coat. Powder Coating is a process by which a high quality clear or colored coating is baked on to the collar. This coating is impervious to moisture and most chemicals and will provide years of protection from rust and corrosion.
